MC Love

In an attempt to make up a song list for my wedding reception, I was going through all my music (English at least) to pick the best and the brightest. Just FYI, for an average 4-hour reception they recommend having 80-110 songs to play! Whoo! That is a lot of music. Luckily, I have tons of songs to choose from.

Scanning through my music brought back a lot of fond memories to me - especially when I got to Mariah Carey. The first CD I ever bought was Mariah Carey's Daydream (back in '95!! Holy crap!) and I seriously played the shit out of that CD. I loved every song! Classic classic album with hits like Fantasy, One Sweet Day, Always Be My Baby... sigh. I really hope that the young whippersnappers of today realize that Mariah Carey is way more than "Touch My Body" or the woman who married a guy 10 years younger than her (Nick Cannon. And they have twins now!).

Not to be panning on Mariah's recent songs... but they just can't compare to her classic hits from before. Although I do love "Obsessed", partly because it's inspired by a line from the movie "Mean Girls"! Good movie.

I think another reason why I loved her songs was also because she used impressive vocabulary (or at least it seemed that way when I was 12!). Or at least referenced things that required a little intelligence. I mean, even in "Obsessed" she talks about a Napoleon complex. A little more complex than, for example, Dev's "Dancing in the Dark".

A good example is my favorite song of MC ever, Breakdown ft. Bone Thugs n Harmony.

So classic, so good! The lyrics seemed very meaningful even before I even had my first breakup! And she used words such as "nonchalant" and "guise"! Okay, maybe not SAT material but I was impressed, back in the day.

And just to finish, a gorgeous cover of MC's classic Whenever You Call, originally with Brian McKnight.

Back from Paris and into the Fall!

Came back from Paris on the 17th... was supposed to be back in Syracuse that night but I missed by connecting flight! Darn it. Well I got the next one out on Sunday, so I was back in apartment sweet apartment by the afternoon. Thank goodness I have Sun/Mon/Tues off. It's like a mini-vacation after vacation. Which, to be honest, was pretty essential because the Paris trip was brutal! In an amazing way, but tiring nonetheless.

The weather in Paris was strictly autumn-feeling, with coolish days and definitely cooler nights. It's sort of the same in Syracuse, yet strangely seems warmer. Maybe because I only experience Syracuse in my nice temperature-regulated car? In any case, summer is over. Sigh... it was good while it lasted. And it's time for another autumn in Syracuse and then a terrible terrible winter. Reminder to self... must schedule engagement photos and book a dj!

One of my favorite songs by Death Cab for Cutie, and very fitting for summer's end!

La Vie en Rose

Flying to Paris tomorrow night and I am so excited! I love traveling, and traveling with friends is even better! And even though I've technically been in Paris before, whizzing through on one of those whirlwind bus tours that the Chinese travel agencies set up, it felt like little bits and pieces of it. I never rode the Metro, we didn't get to go all the way up in the Eiffel Tower, and we saw three things in the Louvre (the Venus de Milo, Winged Victory and Mona Lisa) and then we were out. And geez, we ate McDonalds on the Champs Elysees. It was a pretty nice McDonalds, but I mean come on~!

Paris in 2007

It was also pretty cold when we went last time. Weather.com promises Paris to be in the high 60's and sunny with it... <crosses fingers>

being a busy bee!

Started thinking about wedding things again... mainly, finding a Chinese/English speaking MC/DJ! Thankfully in NYC this is a pretty common thing so I have a few options. Right now I'm aiming towards Dynasty Weddings, of which their best package seems the best... since it also includes photobooth! And I really really wanted a photobooth. Of course, it's also 3k... is that typical?

Also fell in love with some custom wedding cake-toppers, mainly these form lollipopworkshop on etsy:

That Stupid Song

First off... I hate that new song by Jason Derulo, "Don't Wanna Go Home". But why, you might ask? Party beat, vapid lyrics, and mildly catchy tune = instant pop hit. But yep, I hate it, mostly because it samples from Robin S's "Show Me Love", a classic from 1993 which I remember well as the background music to our aerobics class at Paerdagat Day Camp. Ahh, Paerdagat Camp!

...hot summer...

Omo. I'm actually glad that I'm working this weekend. At least there's free AC in the pharmacy! And seriously... I thought we were up central new york to avoid this crazy kind of heat! Well... must wait it out.

Thought this seemed fitting. More f(x)! Not my favorite but it is definitely a HOT HOT SUMMER.

f(x) - Hot Summer

Honestly I think the song is kinda silly when I read the lyrics. What the heck does it mean about the foreigners and wearing long black outfits?!

DIY: Floral Head Wreaths

So Dong and I went to the Sterling Renaissance Festival on Saturday and while we were there I was instantly charmed by the headpieces they were selling:

They had all types, from dainty and cute to ornate and ostentatious. The prices were from $20 up... and being with my frugal hubby, I went away empty handed. Sigh. But of course, that didn't mean I couldn't take pictures with them... sooooooo....

f(x) - 아이 (Love) - Romanization and English Translation

I'm not a huge fan of f(x) but I was listening to their latest mini-album but one of their songs caught my ear:

f(x) - 아이 (Love)

So I had to get the romanized lyrics (B o o Y i . r A g A m U f F i N ™) and English translation. None of it done by me, but compiled through the wily ways of the internet.

I can't say that the lyrics are particularly sparkling or thought inducing but everything just sounds better when you don't understand it~!! One of my favorite parts is Amber's rap near the end.

Ottawa Adventure!

In a lovely stroke of timing, Dong and I had the weekend of July 4th off... and that means 3-day weekend baby! It would have been great if we could've had that Friday off as well, but I'm not going to quibble. Three still > two. And that's plenty of time for us to go on a little Canadian adventure to Ottawa, the capital city of all Canada. That's right... the whole country. It's the Canadian Washington D.C.!

Okay true... when you think of Canada, Ottawa doesn't exactly pop into your mind. In my mind, the order goes something like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Quebec City.... etc. So I suppose you could say I went into the trip with pretty low expectations. But it really surprised me with how pleasant and scenic it was.

Happy Canada Day!

Ooh I totally forgot that today is Canada Day! Our neighbors up north are celebrating today, yay for them! Especially in the city of Ottawa, where the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are visiting. Man I bet they are throwing them one wild party up there.
The Royals arriving in Ottawa from popsugar.com

Dong and I will be heading up to Ottawa as well for the weekend. Time to spot the royals!

More 2NE1!

I guess since their new song came out, I've been revisiting my obsession with 2NE1. They've only been out for a few years but I followed them from their first song (Lolli-lolli-lollipop!) which was originally just a song for a commercial but became so popular that they made a single of it. And I can say in all honesty that I've loved all of their singles that have followed! I used to listen to their debut album on repeat, even though I didn't know what they were saying... so then I would search for lyric translations, watch youtube videos with eng subtitles, etc. Ah sigh, the days of youthful obsession.

2NE1 - Stay Together - one of my favorites!

I love the lyrics too. Definitely the lyrics are a lot better than some of the repetitious booty-shaking stuff on the radio now. I'm trembling for you forever!

2NE1 is... the Best!

Ahhh, 2NE1 is back with their latest single, aptly titled "I Am The Best"!!! Honestly I'm not a huge huge fan of the super-electro beat, but it's still catchy and I still love 'em. And you really cannot look away from their crazy outfits, and Dara's hair in the last part. Geez! I want Bom's shiny leather outfit... and the dog.

红楼梦 - Dream of the Red Chamber

Recently I've been reading an English translation of Dream of the Red Chamber, one of the four great classical Chinese novels. I've had the book for a long time, given to me as a gift by my buddy Ana (which she picked up at the Strand, great store!). I did try reading it before when I first got it, but the huge cast of characters quickly overwhelmed me (there's tons of relatives, waiting maids, and other minor characters) and I kinda let it slide. However, now that I am older and wiser, and also bored out of my mind in Syracuse, I find that I'm 7/8ths done with reading it. Plus, being the consummate wiki-er I am, I already know what happens plot-wise. Just reading to see how the writer plays it out.

For those not familiar, Dream of the Red Chamber is about the love triangle between the spoiled son of the rich Jia family, Jia Baoyu, and his beautiful but frail cousin Lin Daiyu and his other lovely cousin Xue Baochai. Overall the novel details social and political workings of the family and of the time (bribing officials to overlook bad behavior, wives scheming against other family members, painful deaths and suicides, etc etc), and shows the gradual decline of the wealthy Jia family. Also, you have to throw in some mystical elements like how Baoyu is the reincarnation of a magical stone and Lin Daiyu is reincarnated from a plant that the stone used to water.... Okay, it gets a little confusing. Oh, did I mention that Baoyu was born with a precious jade stone in his mouth? And that his name means... Precious Jade?!

Even before I was reading the translated version, I had a children's version of the book that I bought from China years ago on a family trip. I'll admit that I bought the book because of the colorful and pretty pictures. Ooh pretty pictures! Pretty girls in pretty clothes!

scanned from my book, the family at a meal with the matriarch in the center. Look at all that yummy drawn food!

week 19, 20, 21, 22 picture roundup!

I've been so terribly remiss about this!! I'm also missing days a lot. I think it's pretty safe to say that my resolution to take a picture a day is sorta shot. But I shall perservere~!

5/8 - yummy yummy tomato, basil and mozzarella salad. Just drizzle a little olive oil, sprinkle some salt/pepper and you're good~!

5/9 - May flowers, loving it!

Another Year, Another Ithaca Reunion!

So this past weekend was our yearly Ithaca reunion! YAY! Successful one too, if I may add. Basically a getaway with Cornell peeps to Ithaca for a few days, culminating in a rainy BBQ. The rainy BBQ is a must. It's a tradition, I tell you!

2005 taughannock falls bbq, the one that started it all

2010 ithaca reunion, another rainy one!

a light at the end of the tunnel!

Agh, just finished a 6 day shift consisting of 4 12.5 hour weekdays and 9 + 8 hour weekend. So relieved that it's over! I was practically willing the clock to move faster today so I can have one day off tomorrow... and then back to work on Thursday! But at least I have a day off, dammit.

I think a lot of people don't realize how tiring it can be to be a pharmacist (especially a retail one). For my company at least, most pharmacies only have 1 pharmacist a day so that means 12.5 hour days on the weekday, not counting my 1 hour drive each way. You're standing most of the day, running between computers, the register and the drug shelves. You chase the doctor down for a refill or a prior auth, only to get yelled at that it's not ready (which isn't your fault!). Or you call worker's comp to review claims and it takes days for the adjustor to get back on, which is usually for controlled pain medication (and that's a touchy topic in of itself...). Then there's the annoying stuff like keeping inventory down, dealing with all the temporary NDC substitutions and bleh.... There's so much more. UGH! Just the daily life of a retail pharmacist.

Happy June!

Man another month has flown by in a flash! And now we're onto the steamy days of June. I am totally feeling the better weather, especially considering how crappy the winter was. Up here in central New York, it feels like spring was just a month and now we're already onto summertime weather! Lovin' it.

Anyway I had a happy happy Memorial Day in NYC with my ladies! Although it's tiring to drive back to the city it was totally worth it to see my friends. It was also a shame that Dong couldn't be with me, but I'm sure he thought of me from time to time while he was playing Starcraft. =D

Passion Tea Lemonade

So now that warmer weather is coming, I get cravings for a certain drink at Starbucks - their Passion Tea Lemonade! Geez I will drain that stuff in 2 minutes... maybe because I usually get a tall instead of a venti or something. It's just so tart and refreshing! The only downside is that Dong complains incessantly that it's totally not worth the money and that they put too much ice in it (which they do... it's practically half full of ice...). So finally, to quit his yapping, we found out that they have recipes online which mimic the starbucks one pretty darned well! Now we make pitcherfuls of the lovely pink stuff and I never have to spend 4 bucks on a tall PTL!

week 18 picture roundup!

This week we went back to NYC to finalize our wedding venue and our wedding date (whee!). Some drama over the date... but it's hard to find a day that will satisfy everyone, sigh.

5/1 - on the road back to NYC, driving through NJ

week 17 picture roundup!

Day off today and it feels so GOOD....!! It's a little depressing because I've only started working in earnest recently, but I am already looking forward to when I can start doing part-time instead of full. Just can't beat being at home and chillaxing. As Bruno Mars says, "Today I don't feel like doing anything...."

4/24 - yummy linguine alfredo with fried shrimp! prepared by me!

Happy Mother's Day!

What a gorgeous day for Mother's Day! Sunny and warm even in the Cuse, with temperatures up to 70. And to take advantage of the glorious weather, I'll be in here writing a blog entry and playing Sims Medieval =D

currently taking up too much of my free time....

week 16 picture roundup!

Went to check out wedding venues on Monday... what a freaking tiring day! The rest of the week went by in a blur of work and work... and hitting deer. Ugh.

4/17 - the morning drive to Ithaca, pretty morning sky!

week 15 picture roundup!

Another week of work and wedding stuff. This week we were gearing up to check out wedding venues in Long Island, which meant some legwork online, making appointments and making sure we had the day off. Our ambitious plan was to hit up 6 places on Monday (4/18)!

4/10 - yummy crab dip at Tully's. You really can't go wrong with crab dip!

More Dangers of Driving

Sigh. I am a killer.

Of deer that is. With my car. Sigh.

And now there's a deer lying twisted on the side of the road on someone's lawn, and I'm left with a messed up front bumper and feeling guilty. Ugh.

Cornell ♥

It was a gorgeous day yesterday! Man there's nothing like a little sun and mild weather to really pump one's mood up. So yesterday we decided to go to Ithaca for a little while - I was hoping to catch some cherry blossoms in bloom, either next to Olin or in the Plantations. After all, now that we live in Syracuse, Ithaca is only like 1.5 hours away - and I go there for work 3-4 times a week, so I'm pretty familiar with how to get there. I can see Ithaca being a common day trip as the weather gets better =D

week 13 picture roundup!

Gosh I can't believe it's already April! Time is definitely flying by, and now it's almost only a year until our wedding... Time to get serious and start doing some more research!

3/27 - just got my Professor Kobre's Lightscoop! This is basically a nicer version of what I used to do, which was prop up a white card to help reflect/diffuse the built-in flash on my camera. Why are other people so much smarter than me?!

Wedding Packages of LOVEEEEE

Not to toot my ethnicity's horn or anything.... but Asians are so smart! Who else would realize the huge demand in wedding packages, a way to simplify a bit of the chaos of wedding planning by bundling together some basic elements - photography, videography, and clothing? Maybe it's not a strictly Asian business, but I haven't heard of other places that specialize in these packages. It's just so intuitive!

Maybe part of it is that Asian love of photo-taking. Don't tell me you haven't seen Asian girls (and guys!) posing in front of the most random, mundane things, with the big-smile-v-sign combo. Heck, I've done it plenty of times, if not 75% of the time when I was younger (Okay, I still do it now...) It was like I had an insane urge to document everything I was doing, with me in the picture so it was proof that I was doing it. Look, I'm going to eat this waffle! Check out me and this okonomiyaki! V-SIGN!!!!

It just isn't complete without the v-sign.

week 12 picture roundup!

A nice week - my "short" week, meaning I only worked Sun/Wed/Thurs. Of course next week I will be working Mon/Tues/Fri/Sat but I do love having a three day weekend every other week! An especially busy weekend, as I drove down to NYC to check out wedding packages and then drove back up on Sunday. A lot of driving, but now that Cassiopeia is good I know she can handle it!

3/20 - what usually goes on during Sunday night!

Wedding DIY: Bridesmaid Invites

I recently decided on a few amazing friends for my bridesmaids, and although I have already contacted them through phone/email/text, I really wanted to send them something lovely and "official" that would kind of set the tone for the wedding. Plus I do love all things crafty... this might change as more wedding plans crop up, but for now I felt inspired!

week 11 picture roundup!

This week it started feeling more like spring, especially since we had a gorgeous warm day in the 60's on Thursday! It was amazing! But then, it got cold once again... But spring must be coming, since the vernal equinox was this weekend. It's a sign!

3/13 - so it BEGINS.

Take a Deep Breath...

Wedding planning. These two little words strike terror into my heart, even though it's for such a joyful occasion. I want to have a lovely and heartfelt wedding, without all of the annoyingly necessary planning and research that goes into it. Why, oh why can't it be so? Venues. Save the dates. Photographer. Wedding stationery. Flowers. Guest list. All of that delirious minutiae that go into making a wedding personal and memorable. And I'm supposed to figure that out myself?!

Okay fine, I'm sure some of you would say that the future husband should be involved too, to which I heartily agree! But when your fiance is mostly concerned with budgeting and not so much what the wedding colors should be... it's not much of a help. Which I suppose is partially great, because then I can have everything I want (within budgeting reason)! But then it's also partially not-so-great, because I'll end up ripping out my hair.

week 10 picture roundup!

First full week of March kicked off with a big snowstorm, but now things seem to be settling down pretty nicely. It's starting to feel like spring! But some bad news at the end of the week...

3/6 - what happens at home.... goes online!

when the going gets tough...

The tough turn to food! Most notably, a delicious Chipotle fajita bowl brimming with steak and generously slathered with cheese and sour cream. The best remedy for work exhaustion and microwave meals - nom nom nom!

Been a little quiet on the blog front, due to lots of work, feeling sleepy on my days off, and also thinking about everything happening in the world and also in NYC. There have been a lot of sobering events recently and it definitely makes little me feel a little down and quite insignificant - after all, you can't control what life will bring to you. Bad things happen to good people all the time, but you just have to keep going and living your life as best as you can. がんばろう、日本!

Friday, March 11, 2011

week 9 picture roundup!

2/26 NONE -
I had my accident today... in retrospect I guess I shoulda taken some pictures, but it was kind of depressing and I kind of don't want photographic evidence of it. I just want to get it back from the collision place like new!

2/27 - the card Dong got me for my birthday. He said he had a gift card for me... a "card that is a gift". HA!

Thursday, March 3, 2011

Sunrise, Sunrise

Wow, my day off and I end up waking up at 7! Blame it on Dong getting ready for work, blame it on the gorgeous sun streaming into our bedroom, but it doesn't feel too bad! I've always hoped that I could become one of those mystical, sadistic "morning people"; maybe this is my conversion?

Anyway, waking up early let me fool around on blogger and figure out how to put those 'jump break' things into my posts so I don't give away all the goodies right at the get go. Gotta keep some mystery and have you guys click for more, right? I think it's particularly effective when you do it

week 8 picture roundup!

Ugh so tired. Gonna sleep in 15.... I'm an old lady now~!

2/20 - Copper nachos at Copper Top Tavern. HUGE appetizer, and definitely overwhelmed me and Dong!

Winter Driving =(

Bad thing happened today. I got into my first car accident. SIGH. Thankfully no one else was involved, no injuries or anything, but my poor baby car... my poor Cassiopeia! I woke up late for work, and while driving to work (a little frantically, I admit) I hit some snow, spun out of control, and ended up hitting the guard rail with my front and back bumper on the left side. Oh yeah, and I ended up completely turned around so I could watch oncoming highway traffic while I flashed my hazard lights. Definitely... stressful.

**Mah Bling**

I know that it's kinda crass to be all up in people's faces about jewelry, but I really love my engagement ring. I really really do! Is it so wrong for me to be happy when I look at it sparkle and shine? Is it crazy and obsessive when I can spend time just watching it glint in the harsh fluorescent glow of pharmacy lights? Come on, you gotta give a girl a little leeway. It's not about the carats as much as the design and what the ring represents. An engagement ring is an epic symbol, not just a fancy piece of jewelry but a sign of love, commitment, and passion. And so much more sparkly than the upcoming wedding band!

I really love my fiancee/hubby-whatever for letting me choose my engagement ring. A little lacking in the element of surprise, but totally makes up for it by being exactly what I want. And thus begins my little photographic tribute to my ring. I just wish I had pretty model hands!

week 7 picture roundup!

This was my first week as a pharmacist and pretty chill as weeks go. I envision a lot more problems in the future, but I'm glad it started relatively smoothly!

2/13 - making some chocolate mousse with raspberries the day before the V-Day. From a box mix, lest anyone is actually impressed.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

week 6 picture roundup!

The first full week of February was a week of rest and recovery for me, due to my wrist injury, and had the happy consequence of extending my original one week vacation into two weeks! However, it gets pretty dull to be sitting around at home having a sore wrist, but I did catch up on a lot of TV!

2/6 - Just got back home to Syracuse and spent a little time counting up how much lai see I got this year. A little crass, hehe. Year of the Rabbit  = cute red envelopes!

♥~~happy valentine's day~~♥

Happy Valentine's Day!

And also, happy first day working as a pharmacist! Hmm, that doesn't flow so well... So, today was my first day as a licensed pharmacist and I think it went pretty well. No screaming patients and only minor minor insurance problems. Yay! And now, after spending hours with crappy Nordictrack customer service, I can truly appreciate how much more streamlined it is to call health insurance companies. Phew.

Remember to kiss a loved one tonight~!

Pharm Life

Sooo... I just received my first schedule for next week, when I start working as a licensed pharmacist. Eeks!!! Interestingly enough, my first day as a pharmacist will be on Valentine's Day. Sorta detracts from the romance doesn't it? I probably won't be thinking about love while doling out lortab and tramadol.

do you know what this drug is?

Anyway it's kinda nerve-wracking. Now I'll be THE ONE, the one who gets asked all the questions, stupid or otherwise. Now I can no longer play it off by saying I'm just the intern.... the grace period has ended! Time to pay up.

I'm pretty prepared to get stressed out the first week - I'll be driving 3 hours round trip for 4 days, plus the inevitable stress of working at a retail pharmacy. Thankfully I'm working after the annoyance of the new year, with all the insurance changes and whatnots. Hopefully some lady won't come up screaming that she doesn't have a deductible, etc, etc.... I hate insurance problems!!!

It's time to step up my game and do it!

MV to get 'FIRE'd up!,

week 5 picture roundup!

This was my first vacation week of the year, yay, to coincide with Chinese New Years! Unfortunately I came into this week with a fractured wrist so it really made it harder to do.. well... anything! But I still got to go out and see friends and family, so it was still a good break! No pun intended.

1/30 - Joe's upstate house has a lot of chicken themed stuff...

1/31 - yummy crab dish at Amazing 66 with Cornell and other buddies

2/1 - after family dinner, a picture of my peaceful living room, complete with tropical island wallpaper

2/2 - lovely miso ramen at Ramen Kuboya with Dong

2/3 - iPad that was meant for my parents but more used by me!

2/5 - yummy dimsum and friendly service at 88 Palace in chinatown =D

week 4 picture roundup!

Week 4 was a little hectic - the week before my vacation (from 1/30-2/5) but also a week that I was to work in Buffalo, and then go to Windham afterwards for a snowboarding trip. That meant a lot of packing beforehand and having tons of stuff, like snowboards and a huge cross-stitch gift to my parents, in the trunk of my car. Snowboarding didn't work out the way I wanted -  I ended up having a fractured wrist after my first run, and everything afterwards was figuring out how to work around it - driving, etc. But it was definitely an eventful week~!

1/23 - a nice homecooked meal for me and hubby - pork chops and mixed veggie pasta!

1/24 - homemade garlic bread, slathered with butter and garlic and then baked to golden goodness. YUM!

1/25 - Back to Buffalo again! This time staying at a pretty nice Holiday Inn. I get 2 queen beds, yay me!

1/26 - In the middle of Paris planning makes me Paris crazy!!

1/27 - Back at home for one night with my favorite boy. His face is lit up by the glow of his new Droid X, aka his new gf.

1/28 - my other zoom lens that I don't use enough.....

1/29 - After a long day of driving, sleeping for 5 hours, snowboarding and fracturing my wrist, we finally end up eating dinner at Brandywine Restaurant, an Italian place with a LOTR theme.

week 3 picture roundup!

This is so belated! But better late than never. Week 3 was a pretty normal week - cooking at home and working. I love cooking a huge batch of chili at the beginning of the week to bring to work for lunch/dinner =D And somehow, I don't get tired of it!

1/16 - This is the dining room light that is just the right height to bump Dong's head. He's gotten really good at dodging it!

1/17 - Looks a little unappetizing, but I love this chili! From a recipe that Viv received, passed through generations of health professions students!

1/18 - One of the few healthy things that I love to eat - cherry tomatoes!

1/19 - Kinect is here! Time to break out with Dance Central!!

1/20 - This makes me miss the rx peeps at Skaneateles. You pronounce that Skinny Atlas, fyi.

1/21 - Pretty sunrise over the 690E, while driving to work. The story of my life!

1/22 - The side dishes at Secret Garden, a Korean/Japanese restaurant in Syracuse.
